The most important thing is to enjoy your life — to be happy. It’s all that matters.Audrey Hepburn
The one thing which I believe connects all us together is that we all are looking for the same thing and want the same thing in life. We all want love and happiness in our life. That’s one thing we all have in common. No matter which part of the world we live in, what our belief system is or which religion we follow; we all want to live a whole-hearted life. We all want to be happy. Isn’t it?
But I think we’re not very good at understanding happiness as human beings. Why do I think so? Because it took me years to realize three simple things about happiness.
- Happiness isn’t about Big Stuff
- Success doesn’t Equal Happiness
- We should take Responsibility for our own Happiness
1) Happiness isn’t about Big Stuff
I used to think about happiness as the big stuff. It’s not the big stuff. Happiness is the small stuff. So those moments of joy don’t need to be some big event and usually, they are not. Like my dinner tasted good tonight, I got a text from an old friend and my sibling kept the last piece of chocolate for me without being asked. These tiny moments of joy are what make our life wonderful.
For me, happiness is walking barefoot across an earthly carpet of freshly mown grass.
Happiness is a hug from a loved one.
Happiness is singing while taking a shower or dancing to tunes of my favorite song.
Happiness is having a popsicle on a hot summer day.
Happiness is having a hot chocolate in my fuzzy warm blanket during cold winter nights.
Happiness is the smell of new (okay fine, old as well) books
and the list can go on…
Happiness is all about these simple and small things, which we tend to ignore, while waiting for the big events to take place.
2) Success doesn’t Equal Happiness
When we were kids, we were told that once we get first in class, we’ll be happy or once we lose weight, we’ll be happy, or once we get into premier college, we’ll be happy, etc. All these things make us think that it’s gonna happen, but it doesn’t happen. It gets pushed on to the future. Mainly, because success is a moving target. And, once we reach that level, our definition of success changes.
So, don’t wait for a big promotion, or some big event to open that champagne bottle, you have been saving for quite a long time. You don’t have to wait for a grand party, to wear that cool dress you just bought. The fact that you’re alive, at this very moment, is a reason big enough to celebrate. Cheers!!!
3) We should take Responsibility for our own Happiness.
We cannot make everyone happy. It’s impossible!
We cannot even keep one-person happy 24×7, no matter how hard you try.
Happiness is an inside job. Happiness is a choice. So, the only person for whose happiness we are responsible is ourselves.
So, what does happiness mean to you? And, what would you love to add to this list?
